The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives by Katie Couric

What was the tipping point for Malcolm Gladwell? What unscripted event made Meryl Streep who she is? How did Mario Batali cook up his recipe for success? In this inspiration-packed book, Katie Couric reports from the front lines of the worlds of politics, entertainment, sports, philanthropy, the arts, and business—distilling the ingenious, hard-won insights of leaders and visionaries, who tell us all how to take chances, follow our passions, cope with criticism, and, perhaps most important, commit to something greater than ourselves.

Among the many voices to be heard here are financial guru Suze Orman on the benefits of doing what’s right, not what’s easy; director Steven Spielberg on listening rather than being listened to; quarterback Drew Brees on how his (literal) big break changed his life; and novelist Curtis Sittenfeld on the secrets of a great long-term relationship (she suggests marrying someone less neurotic than you); not to mention:

• Michael Bloomberg: “Eighty percent of success is showing up . . . early.”
• Eric Stonestreet: “Remember that the old lady who’s taking forever in line is someone’s grandma.”
• Joyce Carol Oates: “Read widely—what you want to read, and not what someone suggests that you should read.”
• Jimmy Kimmel: “When in doubt, order the hamburger.’”
• Apolo Ohno: “It’s not about the forty seconds; it’s about the four years, the time it took to get there.”
• Madeleine K. Albright: “Never play hide-and-seek with the truth.”

Along the way, Couric reflects on the good advice—and the missteps—that have guided her from her early days as a desk assistant at ABC to her groundbreaking role as the first female anchor of the CBS Evening News. She reveals how the words of Thomas Jefferson helped her deal with her husband’s tragic death from cancer, and what encouraged her to leave the security of NBC’s Today show for a new adventure at CBS.

Delightful, empowering, and moving, The Best Advice I Ever Got is the perfect book for anyone who is thinking about the future, contemplating taking a risk, or daring to make a leap into the great unknown. This book is for all of us, young or old, who want to see how today’s best and brightest got it right, got it wrong, and came out on top.

The Power of LEO The Revolutionary Process for Achieving Extraordinary Results by Subir Chowdhury

Hailed as "the Quality Prophet" by "BusinessWeek," Subir Chowdhury is the long-established global authority on the critical importance of quality and how to achieve it with Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). Now, he takes it to the next level by showing you how to build quality into the DNA of your entire organization.

In his bestselling book, Chowdhury introduced his next-generation management system--LEO. In The Power of LEO, he describes how continuous focus on quality improvement can revolutionize any process--from manufacturing operations to managerial decision making. The secret is to cease delegating the responsibility of quality to specific teams or departments and permanently lodge it within the core of an organization's culture.

Chowdhury's profoundly simple yet extraordinarily effective management system is based on three basic principles:
Listen--Seek input from all stakeholders within your organization, from suppliers to employees to customers
Enrich--Create new ideas for improvement and solutions for problems using simple techniques
Optimize--Select the best improvement idea or solution, subject it to testing in the real world, and correct all shortcomings

Quality methodologies like Six Sigma and Lean can be highly effective but are used narrowly and by limited personnel within an organization. LEO is the encompassing strategy that can be easily embraced by everyone within an organization, resulting in measurable improvements in your operations, products, and bottom line.

If you're serious about competing in the global marketplace, join Subir Chowdhury on his quest for overall quality and transform your organization from a company that does some things well into an established industry leader.

Built to last: successful habits of visionary companies

Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies and studied each in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from the comparison companies and what were the common practices these enduringly great companies followed throughout their history?"

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the 21st century and beyond.

The Way to Happiness By L. Ron Hubbard

Ask anyone in life what they really want and you'll usually get the answer "to be happy".

This simple book – The Way to Happiness – gives one the knowledge and understanding to achieve just that.

It is the first non-religious moral code based wholly on common sense and just through it's distribution can help arrest the current moral decline of society and bring back integrity and happiness to Man.

First published in 1981 it was designed to fill the moral vacuum in our increasingly materialistic society through it's 21 basic principles that guide one to a better and more fulfilling life.

This simple code of conduct can be understood and followed by anyone, of any race, colour or creed and works to restore the care and decency that are the key to uniting humankind.

The real power of this small book is realized when it's distributed to others, hand to hand. Since the behavior of those around you can affect your life, you are able to improve your own survival as well as theirs, by using this book and then giving copies to your family, friends and associates.

By doing so you encourage others to treat their fellows with kindness, compassion and respect… helping them to survive better and lead happier lives and therefore doing so yourself.

Want to be truly happy and able to do and achieve more in life?

Would you like to know how to help people more and see them flourish and propser?

Would you like to be able to change conditions in your house, area, country or even the world?

The Way to Happiness provides you a means to do all this and more.

21 basic principles that guide one to a better and more fulfilling life.

However, developing our minds to be happy is no easy task. Only through building inner strength can we learn not to be dependent on the outside world for our happiness. The Happiness Quotient delves deep into the mysterious topic of inner power, and its source. The mind needs to unlearn in order to harness this potent force. The Happiness Quotient gives us clear, concise direction on how to achieve happiness despite our busy lives, and how to balance economic advancement while uplifting the soul.

The Indian tradition shows us that positive, radiant happiness is our birthright, and the programme outlined in this book illustrates how to achieve it for ourselves. Lisa has written a short, user-friendly pocket book on personal development. Her objective to de-mystifying the concept of spirituality by steering it away from religious connotations. Lisa has done this by using the concept of driving as an analogy for life. And, in doing so, has greatly eased the communication of complex issues. Contrasting with other books on spirituality, this book is very grounded and practical in nature.

Behind the cloud: the untold story of how Salesforce.com went from idea to billion-dollar company--and revolutionized an industry - Marc Benioff, Marc R. Benioff, Carlye Adler

How did salesforce.com grow from a start-up in a rented apartment into the world's fastest growing software company in less than a decade?

For the first time, Marc Benioff, the visionary founder, chairman, and CEO of salesforce.com, tells how he and his team created and used new business, technology, and philanthropic models tailored to this time of extraordinary change. Showing how salesforce.com not only survived the dot-com implosion of 2001, but also went on to define itself as the leader of the cloud computing revolution and spark a 46 billion-dollar industry, Benioff's story will help business leaders and entrepreneurs stand out, innovate better, and grow faster in any economic climate.

In Behind the Cloud, Benioff shares the strategies that have inspired employees, turned customers into evangelists, leveraged an ecosystem of partners, and allowed innovation to flourish. Benioff shows how salesforce.com pioneered a simple idea (delivering business applications as a service over the Internet) to change the way all businesses use software applications and, ultimately, change the way the software industry works.

With Marc Benioff's candid, unconventional advice and unusual call-out lessons from the Salesforce.com Playbook--including Benioff's proprietary management tool, V2MOM--any business can go against the grain, rapidly change the game, and learn how to achieve lasting success. These are also distilled into a 5-step approach called V2MOM, an acronym for vision, values, methods, obstacles, and measures.

It is written in a unusual, but very good, style of making 111 points about how Benioff and his team created and grew Salesforce. The focus he showed through the creation of the firm is impressive. That being said I don't see why Benioff's 'system' for creating and growing his company is necessarily a recipe that will work for others or what differentiates the theory from so many other theories abounding these days.

It is well-structured in ten complementary parts about startups, marketing, events, sales, tech, corporate philanthropy, globalism, finance, leadership, and success.

Awesome book for anyone who has any desire to ever start their own company.

The last lecture by Randy Pausch, Jeffrey Zaslow

The Last Lecture goes beyond the now-famous lecture to inspire us all to live each day of our lives with purpose and joy!

“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
—Randy Pausch

A lot of professors give talks titled “The Last Lecture.” Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can’t help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn’t have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave—“Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams”—wasn’t about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because “time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think”). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.

In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Randy Pausch - Points on How to Improve your Life

In a letter to his wife Jai and his children, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe, he wrote this beautiful "guide to a better life" for his wife and children to follow. May you be blessed by his insight.

POINTS ON HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

Personality:
1. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
2. Don't have negative thoughts of things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment
3. Don't over do; keep your limits
4. Don't take yourself so seriously; no one else does
5. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip
6. Dream more while you are awake
7. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need..
8. Forget issues of the past. Don't remind your partner of his/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.
9. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't hate others.
10. Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present
11. No one is in charge of your happiness except you
12. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn.
Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
13. Smile and laugh more
14. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Community:
15. Call your family often
16. Each day give something good to others
17. Forgive everyone for everything
18. Spend time with people over the age of 70 & under the age of 6
19. Try to make at least three people smile each day
20. What other people think of you is none of your business
21. Your job will not take care of you when you are sick. Your family and friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:
22. Put GOD first in anything and everything that you think, say and do.
23. GOD heals everything
24. Do the right things
25. However good or bad a situation is, it will change
26. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up
27. The best is yet to come
28. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful
29. When you awake alive in the morning, thank GOD for it
30. If you know GOD you will always be happy. So, be happy.

While you practice all of the above, share this knowledge with the people you love, people you school with, people you play with, people you work with and people you live with. Not only will it enrich YOUR life, but also that of those around you.

The Loudest Duck: Moving Beyond Diversity While Embracing Differences to Achieve Success at Work

A great little book about the real reasons to embrace diversity at work and suggestions for how to go about doing it.

It really boils down to making sure that everyone gets heard and people really need to make a conscious effort to do so. Specific suggestions include:

Meetings
- making sure that meeting invites include an agenda so that people who are not comfortable speaking out unprepared, get an opportunity to prepare before meetings.
- the meeting facilitator has a responsibility to ask everyone in the meeting for their thoughts rather than let certain people do all the talking.
- make sure to end meetings by asking people to send additional thoughts later (for those that don't like to voice thoughts that have not been thoroughly thought through)

Feedback
- White men tend to only hear the positive. If you've got some negative feedback to give where specific improvements need to be made, you're probably going to have to be very straightforward about it.
- Women tend to focus on the negative. So, you probably want to be careful about being too harsh unless the problem is so bad that it is career threatening.

Lots of other great stuff in only 150 pages. Success at Work!!

The wisdom of bees: what the hive can teach business about leadership, efficiency, and growth By Michael O’malley

Consultant--and beekeeper--O'Malley shows exactly how bees get things done and how leaders can learn from their highly effective organizations. He has defined 25 lessons on how to get the most out of teams, become more efficient, and prepare for the future.

Social psychologist (and avid beekeeper) O’Malley draws management guidance from the hive in this charming rundown of best business practices. It turns out bees work on the same kinds of problems we are trying to solve in our organizations, including the best strategies for managing short-term vs. long-term gains, stability vs. flexibility, individuality vs. community, and similarity vs. change. O’Malley applies lessons learned from those clever bees to strategies to help organizations survive and grow while wasting as little energy and resources as possible, to expand exploration during low-growth periods, to maintain durability over the long run, to keep energy levels up, to provide ongoing feedback, to avoid overengineering, to discover and use an individual’s specialized talents, and to be objective and data driven. The advice itself is your standard management-lesson fare, but presented in a concise, conversational format with great personality, practicality, and verve.
