A great little book about the real reasons to embrace diversity at work and suggestions for how to go about doing it.
It really boils down to making sure that everyone gets heard and people really need to make a conscious effort to do so. Specific suggestions include:
Meetings
- making sure that meeting invites include an agenda so that people who are not comfortable speaking out unprepared, get an opportunity to prepare before meetings.
- the meeting facilitator has a responsibility to ask everyone in the meeting for their thoughts rather than let certain people do all the talking.
- make sure to end meetings by asking people to send additional thoughts later (for those that don't like to voice thoughts that have not been thoroughly thought through)
Feedback
- White men tend to only hear the positive. If you've got some negative feedback to give where specific improvements need to be made, you're probably going to have to be very straightforward about it.
- Women tend to focus on the negative. So, you probably want to be careful about being too harsh unless the problem is so bad that it is career threatening.
Lots of other great stuff in only 150 pages. Success at Work!!

The wisdom of bees: what the hive can teach business about leadership, efficiency, and growth By Michael O’malley
Social psychologist (and avid beekeeper) O’Malley draws management guidance from the hive in this charming rundown of best business practices. It turns out bees work on the same kinds of problems we are trying to solve in our organizations, including the best strategies for managing short-term vs. long-term gains, stability vs. flexibility, individuality vs. community, and similarity vs. change. O’Malley applies lessons learned from those clever bees to strategies to help organizations survive and grow while wasting as little energy and resources as possible, to expand exploration during low-growth periods, to maintain durability over the long run, to keep energy levels up, to provide ongoing feedback, to avoid overengineering, to discover and use an individual’s specialized talents, and to be objective and data driven. The advice itself is your standard management-lesson fare, but presented in a concise, conversational format with great personality, practicality, and verve.

India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium by Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

In India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, our most distinguished scientist, and close associate Y.S. Rajan examine India's strengths and weaknesses to offer a vision of how India can be among the world's first five economic powers in the year 2020.
They cite growth rates and development trends to show that the goal is not an unrealistic one. Past successes, too, bear them out. For example, we were able to launch the green revolution at a time when experts had all but given up on India ever becoming self-sufficient in food. Similarly, in the field of space technology we started from scratch to have today a system of satellite-based communication linking remote regions of the country. The same sense of purpose can lead us to success in many other areas crucial to achieving the goal of a prosperous, strong nation, assert Kalam and Rajan.
The areas identified ranges from Food & Agriculture to High Tech areas including Strategic Industries. Enabling Infrastructure suggestions viability of inter-linkages between various sectors.
The book has sensitised the younger generation specially scientist/technologist to look ahead in technology development so that rapid changes in many sectors of economy are accomplished.
The publication contain well-defined targets so that active role could be played by all concerned including Industries, R&D personnel, Academia, Government as well as non-Governmental sectors.
He has strong conviction that the accomplishment of targets by each and every one in respective field as contained in the book will surely make India self-reliant and prosperous (A DEVELOPED INDIA) by early next century.

Ignited Minds : Unleashing the Power within India By A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Ignited Minds is a book written by scientist-patriot Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, formerly the President of India. The book was first published in 2002, and the full title of the book is Ignited Minds - Unleashing the Power Within India. Ignited Minds is a logical step forward from Dr. Kalam's earlier book, India 2020 - A Vision for the New Millennium.
Dr. Kalam has dedicated Ignited Minds to a high school child, named Snehal Thakkar, whom he met at a school, and while talking to the students, a question had come up: "Who is our enemy?". Kalam recalled that many answers came up, but the answer on which all agreed came from her (Snehal Thakkar): "Our enemy is poverty".
It is a highly motivating book for young Indians, as also to anyone interested in understanding the reasons for remaining behind in the march of human civilization. The small book of 205 pages contains dynamic and original ideas, examines attitudes afflicting the Indians, and present prescriptions for rapid growth of India to enable the country to emerge as a developed country. The scientist and the seer inside Kalam has addressed the book to young [citizen]s of India.
